What is Canadian Ammolite?
Ammolite Grading
Ammolite gemstones are meticulously graded based on their natural brilliance, colour range, and overall clarity. This recognised ammolite grading system helps distinguish the finest examples of this rare gemstone, which can vary significantly in appearance, colour intensity, and rarity. The four primary grades are AAA, AA, A, and Standard.
The highest grades — AAA and AA ammolite — are exceptionally rare, accounting for only around 3–5% of global annual production. These premium ammolite gemstones display the most vivid iridescence, often revealing a full spectrum of colour that shifts beautifully in the light. Top-grade stones are highly prized for their exceptional clarity, minimal natural inclusions, and striking visual impact, making them ideal for fine jewellery, collectors, and gemstone connoisseurs.
A-grade and Standard ammolite, while more widely available, still showcase the unique beauty that makes this gemstone so special. These stones may feature a more limited colour range or softer brilliance, but each one remains a genuine, natural ammolite gemstone formed over 70 million years ago in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies.
